Dissatisfied at work? Take this opportunity to change jobs in 2020

New year, new start? Most people begin a new year with optimism. There are many who make resolutions or goals to lose weight, save money, or kick an undesirable habit.  What about your changing or modifying your job or career?

A recent survey of 17,000 workers by the nonprofit group Mental Health America(MSA) and The Faas Foundation found that 71 percent of workers are looking to change employers. The two main reasons for their dissatisfaction? Lack of recognition and a stressful environment.

Here are five things to take into consideration when deciding to leave your job or stay:

1. Are you feeling stressed and exhausted, physically and mentally.

Are you easily irritable while at work or even after you leave the office? Do you dread waking up to go to work even more than usual? Rising stress levels can lead to a weaker immune system and make you more susceptible to getting sick. The result of getting sick is that you will miss work and will lose time and money. Listen to your body and understand what it’s telling you. It may be time to move on and get healthy.

2. Do you feel appreciated and respected?

Do you question whether your company cares about you or considers you an asset? Since most of us spend a majority of our time at work, it is essential to our wellbeing to feel valued.  In the MSA survey previously mentioned, 77 percent of workers said they felt their company was unfair when it came to employee recognition. Most said they felt their colleagues got recognition they did not deserve and that those who should be recognized were overlooked. Nearly half, (45 percent) of respondents said they “rarely or never” earned the money they deserved.

3. Is your work environment unhealthy or toxic?

What’s the turnover rate for your company? Does your boss instill faith and confidence in you and your colleagues? A negative work environment will negatively affect your mental and physical health. Sadly, many professionals remain stuck in toxic work environments because they are too frightened to take proactive measures. Don’t wait until crisis hits before considering a new direction. Once you land in a healthy environment, your career will take off.

4. New opportunities for growth within the company?

When’s the last time you received a raise or promotion? This is an important question to ask when you are considering whether to leave your current position. Although you may love the people you work with, you need to think about your future. Staying challenged at work will keep you invested and interested. However, staying at a job because you fear change will only eat away at your career ambitions over time. Take control of your professional life now.

5. Do you believe in your company and what it stands for?

Do your company’s beliefs and values align with your own? If you don’t feel this connection and you lack shared values, your motivation to perform and perform well at your job will be severely affected. It’s time for you to look for a company whose values you believe in.

If you are unhappy with your current employment, it may be time to consider what other options are available to you. Take this new year to find new opportunities that improve your professional and personal life.
