TIME TO CHANGE JOBS? LOOK FOR THESE SIGNS

You have been in your job a few years and noticed your motivation is dwindling. Maybe you no longer feel challenged to learn. Or perhaps you feel like you are going in the opposite direction of where you envisioned your career going.

Everyone’s interests and goals naturally change over time. So how do you know if you’re ready for a job change?

Here are seven indicators that it may be time for you to make your move:

You feel stressed and tired

Are you overly tired on the way to work, sleeping less, or more irritable? These could be symptoms of rising stress levels – an early warning system that something is off.  Stress can affect your mood and immune system, making you more susceptible to colds and lows and impairing performance.

So if your body is trying to tell you something, take a moment to understand the message.

You don’t believe in the company like you used to

When you began working in your current job, it seemed full of possibilities, and you felt proud to identify yourself as an employee of your organization. But recently, you’ve noticed a change in the office atmosphere, and your belief or confidence in the organization isn’t what it was.

Perhaps the company has taken some commercial or strategic decisions that don’t sit well with you. Maybe a management reshuffle has not been a change for the better. Or perhaps it’s just that your thinking has evolved, and you feel your values no longer align with yours.

You can’t wait for the day to end

When you first started this job, you woke up excited about going to work. On the job, you often asked about taking on extra projects and offered to stay late to complete your work. Now, you find yourself counting down the hours until you can log off and head home. You look for the minimum workload rather than look for opportunities to go the extra mile.

It may be that your position doesn’t stretch you any more, or your current employer doesn’t have an adequate development path for you. Either way, it could be time to move on to something that ignites your passion again.

Your job skills don’t match up with your interests

Sometimes people get hired for things they’re good at but don’t necessarily like doing. You may be skilled in software sales but would really prefer to be in marketing. Maybe you’re great at creating spreadsheets but would rather meet with clients instead of sitting at a desk all day. Perhaps you’ve found yourself practicing in one area of law, but you’d prefer another.

It is natural to want to align your interests with your career activity – and the longer you leave it, the harder it can be to switch as you become more and more specialized in a field where you feel you do not belong.

As Steve Jobs once said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.” So now could be the time to take the opportunity while you can and see what you can achieve if you try.

You feel invisible

Do you get the impression that your opinions and contributions go unacknowledged? Have you been overlooked for a promotion or an important project, and you’re finding others get the credit for things you suggested months ago. Perhaps relationships within your team aren’t as cordial or collaborative as they used to be, and team members aren’t socializing together anymore.

Because you spend a significant portion of your time at work, it is important that you feel that you are valued.  It also helps if your work atmosphere is friendly, productive, and encouraging. If you’ve done everything you can to improve the dynamic, but still feel that things are not right, it may be time to move on. Find something new to challenge you and where you think you can make a real difference.

Your job is boring

Sometimes it can be hard to accept that your role is just not substantial enough for you anymore. Unhappily staying in a position because of your sense of loyalty or hesitation to make a change could hurt your career in the long run.

Over time you have developed skills and experience, and it may be time for new challenges. Sometimes an employer may not have the resources to help you reach your potential. What your career may need is the sort of change that only a job switch can provide.

If you see similarities with your job experience after reading these seven signs, don’t be afraid to start exploring your options.

JOB SEARCHING DURING COVID-19? HERE ARE 5 TIPS TO SUCCEED

Job searching was already difficult. But with the added economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic, you may be feeling a bit discouraged. At Strategic Recruitment Solutions (SRS) we are here to help you navigate the changing job market and find employment during these unprecedented times. At SRS, we work with Legal and IT Professionals and their prospective employers; however, these five tips on how to succeed, apply to everyone:

1. Job Searching through Networking and Establishing Your Brand

It is a great time to spruce up your LinkedIn profile and build your brand using social media. Ask yourself, “How do I want potential employers to perceive me? If an employer only looked at your social media pages, what would they think of you? Consider these questions, and adjust your brand accordingly. Not only should your online profile be professional, but it should also be without controversy.  Once you have established a professional brand, work your contacts to see if you can determine who is hiring.

2. Take Time to Develop Your Skills

Not everyone gained additional time due to the pandemic and its layoffs, but for those that now have some surplus of time, utilize that time for professional development. Take an online course regarding a new software you’re unfamiliar with, or take time to develop a new skill or complete a certification. Every hour of knowledge you gain will sharpen your edges as a job candidate. Here is a list of free online learning that is updated continuously.

There has also been an increase in webinars and podcasts due to the coronavirus pandemic; even if you already have all the knowledge and skills you need, you should stay abreast of new developments and innovations in your field.

3. Job Searching Past Your Horizon

The pandemic has oddly helped job searching in some aspects. During various stages of the application and hiring process, because in-person interviews were required,  you may have excluded out-of-state employers from your search. Now, however, with virtual interviews being the norm, there will be new opportunities. According to MoneyWise, due to job opportunities and a lower cost of living, there has been a surge in moving to five states in particular (Idaho, Oregon, Arizona, South Carolina, Washington). For those we want to continue to call Louisiana home, we are here for you.

SRS works with top corporations, legal firms, and tech companies throughout the Louisiana Gulf Region as well as nationally.  If you are ready to discover new job opportunities in the Legal or IT field, our executive recruiters will assist in your job search and career path. Learn more about how we help top-tier talent achieve success.

4. Check and Polish Your Resume

Chances are, you might not have set eyes on it in a while. Now is the perfect time to both update and polish it, so your most important sets of experience, accomplishments, and skills stand out. Since most resumes are digital or coming out of an online portfolio, take this time to make sure that all items you refer to have hyperlinks attached.

5. Prepare for the Virtual Interview

The increasing necessity for distance has made the virtual interview all the more standard. Virtual interviews do have their own set of inconveniences, as it’s difficult to convey the type of person you are, your work ethic, and your outright ability to work at home. The pandemic has produced several new considerations your potential employer will want to explore.

Get ready to talk about how you handled the pandemic. Employers want to evaluate a candidate’s ability to manage stress and pressure. Be open and honest about your strengths and weaknesses during the quarantine. This not only shows that you’re human and honest about your limits, but that you’re functional enough for the workload. If it’s a remote job, you will need solid answers on how you were able to stay motivated working from home, as well as demonstrate hat you are compfortable switching back and forth to work from home as needed.

There are so many unknowns in the current climate, and demonstrating this type of adaptability shows a potential employer that the uncertainty of things moving forward will not affect you to the point where they’re at a loss if they hire you.

5. Prepare for Behavioral Questions

Behavioral questions measure how competent you are with specific abilities, and the real answer to these questions is in the answering. There is no right way or wrong way to answer. These types of questions aim to characterize a person and sketch their personality type. Often these questions are situational, involving past work performance. Here is an example of a behavioral question,  “When was the last time you messed up on a project and didn’t take responsibility for it?” The interviewer is more interested in how you answer the question than the actual event. Your answer should reveal character. What you’re capable of doing and that you have the functionality to act. Learn more about behavioral questions here.

ATTENTION EMPLOYERS! JOB SEEKERS CARE ABOUT WHERE THEY WORK

Executive Recruiters at Strategic Recruitment Solutions

Did you know that 84 percent of job seekers consider a company’s reputation when choosing where to apply for a job? Without a strong employer brand, your company may be missing out on top candidates, potentially losing money, and affecting other areas of your business.

Due to the internet, the way companies recruit candidates for jobs has changed. Job seekers can immediately search for information about your company and they do!

So what is an employer brand? Although most people think of a company’s logo or tagline, the value of your employer brand is so much more.

Why is branding is so important?

Your employer brand is synonymous with your company’s reputation. Your employer brand is everything from your job listings, career website page, company reviews, online reputation, social media presence to your values and mission statement. Positive employer branding helps to attract and retain quality employees, who are crucial to your company’s growth and success.

The main reason why an employer’s brand is so important is that it is the business identity of your company. It’s what makes your company unique or stand out to candidates who are looking for jobs. Yet, it also helps your recruiting team attract and improve the talent pool of applicants. Without a positive and consistent employer brand, your company could sabotage your hiring efforts and make it more difficult for you to hire the best talent.

Why does an employer brand strategy matter?

According to Human Resource statistics,  69 percent of job seekers are likely to apply to a job if the employer actively manages its brand. 50 percent of candidates say they wouldn’t work for a company with a bad reputation – even if they received a pay increase and companies with positive brands get twice as many applications than companies with negative brands, and they spend less on employees.

A positive employer brand is everything, especially when it comes to attracting new talent. By increasing the job pool of qualified candidates, your company will have more options when hiring. A company with a solid reputation, a  genuine interest in their employees’ lives and a positive work culture,  will have no problem attracting the best people.

Creating a positive employer brand through social media. Twenty five percent of all job seekers use social media as their primary tool for job searching and research. In addition, people trust friends, colleagues, and family over other forms of information provided online. If people are talking negatively about your company’s brand or work culture, job candidates will find this information.

Here are three thing that job candidates look for in a company’s employer brand:

1. Does Your Company’s Brand Reflect Your Mission?

Candidates aren’t just looking for a paycheck — they are looking for an opportunity to work for a company with a defined mission. This is particularly true for millennials. Seventy eight percent want their employer’s values to match their own. To captivate potential hires, you must craft a coherent narrative about what is important to you as an organization. Your commitment to this mission should be the thread that connects all of your print and online materials, from your careers page to corporate activism to social media to employee testimonials. Give prospective talent a flavor of what drives the work you do.

2. Credible information about the employee experience

When checking out a new company, job seekers want to know what it’s actually like to work for your organization from those who know best. That’s why it’s important to show your employees’ experience instead of company jargon. Consider taking an active role in getting testimonials from current employees about why they joined your company or what they like about it. People respond best to compelling visuals. A “day in the life” video will do more in two minutes than pages of text.

3. An active and engaging social media presence.

We cannot overstate the importance of social media in your employer brand, considering this digital world we live in now. Up to 57 percent of job seekers use social media in their hiring search. Use social media to give viewers a sense of your unique company identity.

4. A positive candidate experience

The candidate experience is a make-or-break aspect of your employer brand. Seventy eight percent of candidates believer the candidate experience is a reflection of how well the organization values its employees.

That means that job seekers view your candidate experience as “proof” that you live up to your company values. Efficiency, fairness and good communication can create a positive candidate experience .

Make sure your application process is brief, easy and intuitive to use. Many candidates will simply give up if employers ask for page after page of information.

Keep the lines of communication open with prospective talent throughout the recruitment process.  Although an automated email confirming the receipt of an application, a personal note is even better.

5. Encourage employee training and growth

A way to retain employees and attract new talent is to off opportunities to learn and grow within their careers.

This could be training sessions to help employees learn new skills or opportunities to advance within the company. It’s important to make potential candidates aware that training exists. Most people desire to learn new skills. For some, it is the deciding factor when choosing where to apply. If there are no growth opportunities or training potential to develop new skills, why would someone with high skill levels want to choose to work for your company? When you invest in your team, you attract new hires.

Remember, the candidate experience doesn’t stop when you’ve made your hiring decision. Notifying individuals who didn’t get the job is particularly important. Eighty percent of applicants said they would not apply for another position at a company that failed to notify them when a position was filled.

When you leave candidates with a positive impression of your company, you will have talent waiting in the pipeline the next time you’re ready to hire.

Our professional recruiters provide candidates with knowledge and insight based on our years of experience in the Legal and IT fields.
