While unemployment continues to fluctuate nationwide, the legal world remains resilient. Law firms have seen record-breaking demand for lawyers and paralegals in both 2024 and 2025. In Q3, the legal job market remained stable and even. However, the demand for lawyers is more targeted in 2026. Firms are now filling roles faster, lateral moves are increasing, and top firms are better managing their headcount.
AM Law 200 firms saw a 8% increase in total roles, about 236 roles, which exceeds the total market. This reveals that top lawyers remain in high demand despite the current economy’s unpredictability. Each quarter, changes were relatively modest. Job openings rose by 3% while job closings rose by 2% indicating that law firms are moving fast, creating new roles and filling them promptly.

Employment Rates among 2025 in American Law Firms

Law firms based in the U.S. are hiring with intent. In Q3 2025, they posted 2,547 new openings and closed 2,552 positions, bringing the total number of open roles to 5,468. In other words, compared to the third quarter of 2024, there were an 8% increase in new job postings, a 14% increase in job closures, and a 3% increase in total job openings compared to the third quarter of 2024. Hiring continues at a steady pace as firms plan for the start of 2026.

In Q4 2025, law firms posted 2,639 new job openings and filled 2,510 roles. The most meaningful shift came in December, when new job openings rose 44% and closures increased 20% compared to December 2024.

Why The Legal Industry Is Different

The legal world is quite different than the rest of the professional world, which is why the job market is faring better than other markets. Firms want to recruit strategically, emphasizing high-demand specialities such as corporate, real estate, and intellectual property.
  1. High Demand and Growth: Despite the unpredictable job market, law firms are experiencing strong hiring.
  2. High Graduate Employment: In 2024, the American Bar Association enrolled 40,000 students. The ABA and the NALP (National Association for Law Placement) both reported record employment rates in 2024, with 93.4% of graduates with a Juris Doctor degree receiving jobs within 10 months of graduation.
  3. Immense Firm Strength: According to NALP, the most prominent and hottest law firms have seen new job gains and are approaching pre-Great Recession job levels.
  4. Use of AI: As AI progresses, so do law firms. As they implement AI into the workplace to increase efficiency and workflow, they are attracting new talent.
  5. Shifts in Roles: Not only are lawyers’ overall numbers increasing, but so are those of other roles. Paralegals are seeing faster growth and greater responsibilities.
The legal job market is experiencing targeted growth, particularly among major law firms and new law school graduates. This targeted growth reflects a combination of factors, including new technology, prioritizing clients’ needs, and broader economic factors.
Despite unpredictable economic conditions and fluctuating unemployment trends, the legal job market has remained resilient and even expanded compared to 2024. Law firms are focusing on hiring more strategically, focusing on targeted recruitment, adopting AI to increase efficiency, and maintaining a strong workforce.
