Have you ever left an interview thinking, “I could have said that better,” or felt so nervous that you forgot what to say? Sometimes, the words you choose can cost you the job without you even knowing it. Don’t worry—at SRS, we know interviews can be stressful. That’s why we’ve put together a list of phrases to help you feel more confident about yourself and your work experience.
The words you use in an interview matter. Some phrases will make you sound less confident in your accomplishments. Here are seven words or phrases that could use improvement:
1. “I helped with…”
Employers want candidates to take ownership and to self-advocate. It is common to undersell ourselves if we don’t accomplish something 100% by ourselves. However, instead of “I helped,” say “I led…” or “I owned” or “I worked on”. These make you appear more confident and allow you to take ownership of your work.
2. “I think.”
When you say “I think,” it can sound like you’re unsure or doubting your own ideas. Employers want to hear confidence and clear answers. Instead, try saying “I recommend…” or “Based on my experience.”
3. “I don’t have that experience.”
Saying this puts the spotlight on what you lack rather than showing how you can learn and adapt. Try saying, “Though I haven’t done that, I’ll tell you how I would handle that situation…”
4. “Sorry if that didn’t make sense.”
If you apologize when it’s not needed, employers may notice flaws that aren’t really there. Instead, say, “Allow me to reframe that clearly.”
5. “Hopefully that answers your question.”
This is similar to saying “I think”—it makes you sound unsure, even if your answer was good. Instead, say, “Let me know if you need more details or would like me to further explain”.
6. “Does that make sense?”
This also makes you sound unsure and could come across as disrespectful to the hiring manager. You don’t want to come across as rude. Instead, say, “Let me know If you need me to clarity anything.”
7. “Just”
This is another word that makes us downplay our achievements. Saying “just” makes your work and effort seem less important than they are. Try leaving out “just” when you answer.
The language you use shapes how competent you appear. Phrases like “I think,” “I helped,” and “just” can undermine your authority. Replace uncertainty with ownership by saying “I recommend,” “I led,” or “I owned.” Avoid focusing on what you lack; instead, highlight related experience, your approach, and your ability to learn quickly. Apologizing unnecessarily signals self-doubt. Use phrases like “Allow me to reframe that” or “Let me know if you would like more detail” to maintain control and confidence.
